For the second time in as many weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers are mourning the loss of a two-time Super Bowl champion.

WIBW in Topeka, Kansas reports Marvin Kellum is dead at the age of 70. According to a GoFundMe set up in his name, Kellum died on Saturday after battling digestive cancer and multiple myeloma cancer.

Last week, the Steelers lost running back Sidney Thornton, who died at the age of 68.

Kellum, a linebacker who played mainly on special teams, spent three spent three seasons with the Steelers, suiting up for them from 1974 to 1976.


His career highlight came in Super Bowl IX against the Minnesota Vikings, when Kellum recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, a play which ultimately which led to the game’s first touchdown. The Steelers went on to win, 16-6.

Kellum helped Pittsburgh repeat as champions by winning Super Bowl X the following year, beating the Dallas Cowboys, 21-17.

He saw action 42 regular-season games for the Steelers, recording two sacks and one interception.

Kellum finished his four-year NFL career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1977.

According to the WIBW report, “Kellum is survived by his two brothers who remain in Lecompton, Wayne and Kenny, as well as his sister, Karen Ice.”
